HER Number:MDV7989
Name:Whittabarrow, Ashburton

Summary

Possible site of barrow (called Whittabarrow) marked on a map of the Manor of Ashburton dated 1605. The inaccuracy of the map makes accurate siting impossible. No trace of a barrow could be found during 1960 field visit; site now a plantation. The name may possibly apply to one of the two cairns immediately to west of Auswell Rocks (the discrepancy in siting due to pictorial nature of the old map).

Full description

Amery, J. S., 1924, (Presidential Address) The Ashburton of past days: its manners, customs and inhabitants, 94 (Article in Serial). SDV315287.

A map of the Manor of Ashburton, dated 1605, shows a mound feature called 'Whittaborrow', possibly indicating the existence of a barrow. The inaccuracy of the map makes accurate siting impossible but the feature is shown to the north of Ausewell Rocks in an area centred at SX 7370 7200.

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, 1960, SX77SW10 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV301101.

(02/08/1960 Perambulation of the area, now a plantation, revealed no trace of a barrow. The name Whittaborrow may possibly apply to one of the two cairns immediately to the W. of Ausewell Rocks (see 108 SW 10), and discrepancy in siting being due to the pictorial nature of the map.
