One of two buildings to the rear of 6 The Square, Chudleigh proposed for demolition prior to the construction of new dwellings. The 1840 Tithe Map shows two structures present in the garden to the rear of the property, one adjoining the house and the other against the western boundary of the plot. These are also shown on late 19th and early 20th century ordnance survey maps, though with a slighly different plan by the early 20th century. Other details: Figures 5-7.

Building recording was undertaken at 6 The Square, Chudleigh, prior to demolition of a two storey range of outbuildings at the entrance to the garden at the rear. The stone built building, with its gable end facing the yard, is in poor condition. On the ground floor a wide opening was formerly closed by double doors, and above this a small loading door seems to have been the only opening into the lofts. The walls are not plastered, though some traces of external render exist on the north-east wall. The building was divided by a partition wall, since removed. The north-west end seems to have been a cart shed, lit by two small casement windows in the north-east wall and ceiled with plank joists supporting the boards of the first floor. The joists have been partially cut away to provide headroom for a tall vehicle, considerably impairing the strength of the floor above. The south-east end may have been a small stables, as it has plaster on the south-west wall in a pattern suggesting a manger or feeding trough. It has its own entrance from the gardens, via a plank door, and a small casement window. The loft ladder lies in the western corner of the building, and is a later modification, cutting through the original joists. The loft is a single uninterrupted space, with unplastered walls and an open roof. This is of five bays, supported by four flimsy 'A' frame trusses. The end gables are partly timber framed and boarded, but the roof could not be inspected closely as the condition of the first floor was uncertain. Other details: Figures 2-3.
