Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The earthworks do not correspond with any linear features in this location.

Ordnance Survey, 1880-1899, First Edition Ordnance 25 inch map (Cartographic). SDV336179.

Environment Agency, 1998-2017, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: South Devon Coast to Dartmoor, LIDAR SX8665 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 31-MAY-2017 (Cartographic). SDV361470.

A series of parallel linear banks is visible.

Berry, N., 2009, Land at Compton Castle, Devon, 16, 63 (Report - Survey). SDV347354.

Clear indications of ploughing around the contour survive as a series of lynchets in Drew's field (124 on the tithe map). There are at least seven lynchets running north-south along the contour. Some on the lower slopes are less distinct but all are cut by two tracks shown on the 1887 Ordnance Survey map, and are indicative of medieval strip fields. No lynchets were visible in Withycraft (125 on the tithe map) to the north. At the top end of Drew's Field is a much larger scarp, possibly a former field boundary now removed, with a denuded platform at the northern end. Other details: Site Inventory map (2) 062-063.

Ordnance Survey, 2011, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV346129.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (Interpretation). SDV361305.

A series of parallel, linear banks, circa 7m wide and north to south and northwest to southeast aligned, are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. The closely spaced earthworks occupy an area of circa 2.52 hectares and are largely parallel to the west and south facing slopes. The earthworks do not correspond with any linear features on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, or on later available historic maps. Their character and topographic setting support the interpretation they represent possible strip lynchets of medieval date, although the origin of the earthworks transcribed to the east which are more aligned across the contours is less clear.
