Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

The southern of the two conjoining earthworks corresponds with a field boundary in this location.

Environment Agency, 1998-2017, LiDAR DTM data (1m resolution) EA: South Devon Coast to Dartmoor, LIDAR SX8665 Environment Agency DTM 01-JAN-1998 to 31-MAY-2017 (Cartographic). SDV361470.

Two conjoining earthwork ditches are visible.

Berry, N., 2009, Land at Compton Castle, Devon, 16, 61 (Report - Survey). SDV347354.

Remains of field boundary on a steep slope. The boundary divided fields 60 and 61 on the tithe map and is aligned east-north-east to west-south-west. A small scarp about 0.5 metres high and 1.5 metres across (variable) survives, furrowed by sheep tracks. Other details: Site Inventory map (3) 057. Map object based on this Source.

Hegarty, C., Knight, S. and Sims, R., 2018-2019, The South Devon Coast to Dartmoor Aerial Investigation and Mapping Survey. Area 1, Haldon Ridge to Dart Valley (Interpretation). SDV361305.

Two conjoining linear earthwork ditches, circa 9m wide and northeast to southwest aligned, are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017. The southern section of the two earthworks corresponds with a field boundary shown in this location on the mid-19th century Parish Tithe Map, whilst that to the north does not correspond with any linear features. This supports the interpretation that this northern section of earthwork represents an earlier phase of field boundary which had passed out of use and had been realigned further to the south by the mid-19th century. The field boundaries are broadly in keeping with the historic field patterns depicted in this location which is characterised as post-medieval enclosures and are both likely of the same date.
