Two timber framed and timber clad huts on brick bases are the only ones remaining of a number of military huts, erected on requisitioned land in Belmont park during the Second World War. An RAF vertical air photograph clearly shows two rows of eight huts each, with at least four further structures. Records with Exeter City Council identify a further structure, not visible on the aerial photograph, giving twenty-one huts in total. They were used to house the Royal Army Pay Corps office and an infantry records establishment. By 1947 the army had vacated the site, and in January of that year the huts were taken over by the Exeter Education Committee for use by what was to become the Central Technical College, precursor of Exeter College. The date of the restoration of the site to its former use has not been traced. Other details: Photographs.
