The new mid-late 19th century barn at Batworthy was designed for water power but a wheel was never installed and it was actually horse-powered. It is located up a hill some 60.0 meters north-west of the old barn/shippon along the green lane skirting the old orchard. It is the largest building on the farm and is two storeys high, with a loft above for storage. As it is terraced into the hill slope, access to the store and ground level barn are both effectively provided from the varying ‘ground level’. A cartshed adjoins on the north-east end while the wheel house is on the north-west side. The horse engine house projects from the south-east side and is an addition (unlike the wheel house). Barn originally had a slate roof but is now mostly roofed with corrugate iron, apart from the wheel house which retains slate where the roof survives.
Water power never used in the barn due to the regular flooding of the River Bovey which would have prevented easy access to the barn. Clearly the structure was designed by someone who did not know the area very well.
