Brown, S., 2007, Lower Cotterbury Farmhouse, Blackawton, Devon: Historic Building Recording and Archaeological Monitoring of Groundworks, 11 (Report - non-specific). SDV347768.

The excavations uncovered a large rock-cut pit or well which was formerly covered by a small stone structure just beyond the south-eastern end of the house. It had been dug more than 2 metres deep (the pit was not fully excavated for safety reasons). Around the rim of the pit were the remains of a stone wall which formed part of a horseshoe shaped well-house, erected in the angle between the house and an existing wall which extended partway up the bank further to the south-east. The latter wall already contained a doorway or archway which was re-used as the entrance into the well house. The well became used as a rubbish pit after it was abandoned in the early 20th century.
