Lower Langley is referred to as Langeleg(h) in 1242.

According to a local historian a Higher, Middle and Lower Langley are marked on the tithe map. In 1881 both Higher and Lower Langley are recorded as being unoccupied. It appears from the 1880s-1890s Ordnance Survey map that Middle Langley became Higher Langley and when this in turn went out of use Langley dropped the 'Lower'.
