Full description
Bellamy, L., et al, 2002, A Study of the Maritime Archaeology of the Eastern Tamar Estuary (Report - Survey). SDV348208.
It is thought that the smaller of the two buildings is a later addition, though we can not be sure of a date, the larger buttressed building being part of the original Maristow Estate would have been built during the middle ages. The larger building may be the remains of an old gatehouse, which guarded the entrance to the estate. The old etnrances to the buildings have been bricked up, leaving only a small entrance to the front.
On closer inspection of one of the buildings it was discovered that the interior of the walls had been rendered to form an artificial shape to the interior. This render was scorched and marked, indicating the presence of fire. This scorching, coupled with the blocked entrances and shaping effect of the render led us to the conclusion that this building had been converted into a lime kiln.
