It is suggested that the almshouse was not actually in Stoke but on the site of the parish workhouse just to the south of Hartland Mill.

Full description

Anonymous, 1826-1832, County of Devon (Report - non-specific). SDV7513.

Stoke St. Nectan. The almshouse for three poor widows is not the present building which was formerly the church house. The almshouse - founded 1618 - is on the north side of a turnpike road.

An un-named house now converted to a private residence. Externally the only sign of its 17th century origin is one chimney stack and wood mullioned window.

This record can be clarified further. The site for the Almshouses were not in the immediate vicinity of Stoke but were situate on ‘Poorman’s Hill’ now Mill Hill, Hartland. The exact location is coincidental with the parish workhouse on Mill Hill immediately south of Hartland Mill.
