Full description

Higham, R. A., 1986, Was There A Castle at Axminster?, 183 (Article in Serial). SDV348700.

It is possible that the 'old castle' referred to in documents was the remains of an Iron Age enclosure, a possibility that occurred to Davidson, 1833.

Weddell, P. J., 1991, Archaeological Appraisal of Potential Development Areas in Axminster and its Environs, 2 (Report - Assessment). SDV99927.

It was suggested by 19th century antiquarians that Axminster lies on the site of a hillfort, although this has never been substantiated.
