Name:The Cow House at Hartland Quay

Summary

Site of a building overlooking Cowhouse Race. A building is shown broadly in this location on the Tithe Map at which time it was a dwelling. A larger building on a different orientation is subsequently depicted suggesting that it was rebuilt or enlarged in the later 19th century. An old postcard shows it to be a single storey, timber-framed building open at the north gable end but possibly stone walled at the south end.

Full description

Devon County Council, 1838-1848, Tithe Mosaic, approximately 1838-1848 (Cartographic). SDV349431.

A small rectangular building orientated north-south is depicted on the Hartland Tithe Map. The plot (1050) is referred to as House and Court on the accompanying Tithe Apportionment.

Building shown on First Edition Ordnance Survey 25 inch Map. The building is larger than that shown on the Tithe Map and orientated north-north-west to east-south-east, suggesting that it had been enlarged or rebuilt by this time.
