HER Number:MDV81295
Name:Possible conjoined enclosure east of Cheristow

Summary

A possible conjoined prehistoric enclosed settlement is visible on aerial photographs of 1959 as a roughly circular cropmark, overlain by a later field boundary, with a smaller subcircular feature on its north-east side. The cropmarks are visible on only a single run of aerial photographs, and this interpretation is therefore extremely tentative.

Hegarty, C. + Knight, S., 2011 - 2012, North Devon Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty National Mapping Programme Project (Interpretation). SDV349018.

A possible conjoined prehistoric enclosed settlement is visible on aerial photographs of 1959 as a dark roughly circular curvilinear cropmark 115 metres in diameter, with an attached smaller curvilinear cropmark on the north-east side. The smaller curvilinear feature is approximately 75 by 55 metres in size and contains a small irregularly-shaped cropmark. The larger curvilinear feature is overlain by an east to west aligned field boundary. As the cropmarks are visible only on a single run of aerial photographs, and they are fairly indistinct, any interpretation must be viewed as extremely tentative. However further archaeological work could clarify their nature.
