The house now known as The Gables was built in 1730. It was once used as a prison for those due to be hanged at the Old Oak Tree on the Shillingford Road. It had a tunnel, also used as a wine cellar, through which prisoners would be led to their place of execution. Their bodies were then brought back along Hangman's Lane, to be buried on the other side of the road, opposite the house.
