Full description

Church House. A well-restored two-storey building, largely of granite ashlar, abutting into the south side of the churchyard and now used as a parish hall. It has thick walls and splayed window embrasures and at the west end is a prominent chimney-breast supporting a stack with a conical cap. The windows are all modern wooden-frame replacements. At the front are two plain doorways reached by short flights of granite steps; the upper chamber is reached from the east by a long flight of lateral granite steps and a later doorway. In the wall of the churchyard side are some curious air-holes. At the north-west is a rectangular projection containing a curved stone staircase with a round-headed doorway at the top and evidence that the stairs once rose to a higher level. The lower room has a good ceiling with massive chamfered beams, one of which rests on a crude granite corbel; and the wall-plate is supported on two chamfered floor-posts. The fireplace is wide and open with a chamfered granite lintel on inner quarter-round end-corbels, also of granite. The floor is cobbled. The lower area is divided by a good plank screen of six bays, the panels in part pierced, and each containing three turned balusters. At the north end of the screen is a chamfered shouldered doorway of oak (like the upper one). The upper chamber has an open roof of timber and plaster, three-sided and of three bays, with unmoulded curved springers to the principals; the purlins and wall-plates are also unmoulded. The roof is tiled in slate.
