Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, Untitled Source (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV24.

House was garrisoned for the royalists at the civil war, but taken by fairfax in 1645. Vis=2/5/1953(os) the redoubts appear to have been guard posts as each overlooks a separate possible approach, and are not inter visible. South one of two redoubts at great fulford. This earthwork consists of a square pit about 1.0m deep with a bank now visible on all sides but the south. A pond has formed in the pit with an overflow which has been cut into north bank the banks are tree covered and average 1.0m in height and 4.0m in width. The redoubt guards a road to the house which has now been obscured by a beech plantation. The house was besieged for ten days before being captured by parliamentary forces and subsequently used as a base (delderfield). Vis=30/3/1982 (os). One of two identical earthworks formed by cutting an "l" shape into the slope and completed with a flat-topped earthen bank. Only documentary authority is the os 25" 1885. They are too small for the use of large cannon. Subsequently mutilated.
