Summary

Site of a 15th century fire beacon recorded to the west of Jawbone Hill. The field is named as Beacon Field on the 19th century Tithe Apportionment. However, Russell places the beacon to the north of the lane, where there is now a water tower.

Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, SX85SE23 (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV340978.

1. Pre-Elizabethan fire beacon above Dartmouth, now known as Beacon Park was known as le Verebekyn in 1474.
2. An elevated water tank now occupies the site which is approached directly by an ancient hollow track.
3. A water tower surmounted by an Ordnance Survey trig point is shown on 1954 map.

Le Verbekyn fire beacon. 154 metres above sea level on "land between Bakenparkes and l Verbekyn", 1474. Beacon Park is at the summit of Jawbones Lane. There is now an elevated water tank on the site.
