Full description

Rogers, W. H. H., 1942, Barnstaple Turnpike Trust, 161 (Article in Serial). SDV13579.

One of the last acts of the Barnstaple Turnpike Trust was the replacing in 1879 of all the old mile posts on their roads with granite milestones. A polished reddish granite quoin, engraved in gilt, 'Centre of Barum Turnpike Mileage', was inserted in the corner of the Guildhall. Each of the milestones was engraved with the word 'Barum' and an italic number, showing the distance from the Guildhall.

Bone, M., 1973, Barnstaple's Industrial Archaeology, 24 (Monograph). SDV78228.

A brownish granite quoin, set about 600 millimetres from the ground on the corner of the old guildhall , is a reminder of the turnpike era.

Jenkinson, T., 2005, Barnstaple to Exeter (Report - Survey). SDV323127.

Site visit 22nd July 2004. Red polished granite quoin at the corner of the Guildhall. In good condition. The legend reads 'Centre/Turnpike/18/Of Barum/Mileage/79'.
