Full description

Ordnance Survey, 1855-1895, First Edition 1:500 Town Map (Cartographic). SDV338879.

Malthouse, comprising an L-shaped building, marked on 1855-1895 1:500 town map. Map object based on this source.

Bone, M., 1973, Barnstaple's Industrial Archaeology, 30 (Monograph). SDV78228.

The building currently occupied by Kirkhams, opposite Pilton quay, was formerly a malthouse. It was operational in 1698 and belonged to Petters Anchor Brewery until 1918 when it was taken over by an engineering firm.

Google, 2012, Google Streetview (Website). SDV348799.

A long, low two storey white-washed building with few windows under a slate roof with red, crested ridge tiles. The wing at the western end appears to have been truncated and has a modern weather-boarded front. A modern entranceway has also been inserted in the south elevation. Now an auction house.

Ordnance Survey, 2012, MasterMap (Cartographic). SDV348725.

The projecting section at the western end of the building shown on earlier mapping, the base of the 'L', has been demolished, probably to make way for road widening. Map object based on this source.
