Chapel of st. Mary at firebeacon. Bishop stafford licensed celebration here in 1400. Records a chapel of st. Mary attached to hartland abbey (pearse chope). Vis=6/12/1978 (os). No beacon or chapel could be found here.

Chapel site. A Royal Charter of 1189 granted chapels at Harton, Cheristow, Welcombe and all the other chapels built in the parish to Hartland Abbey. A chapel at Firebeacon is listed as being licensed by Bishop Stafford in 1400 and Pearce suggests that this was one of the original 1189 grant chapels.
