Summary

Ash house located in the corner of a field south-east of Sanduck. Recorded in the 1950s, it was listed in 1986. Thought to date to the 19th century or earlier. Round building constructed from granite rubble with a conical corbelled roof of granite. Doorway on south side with large dressed jamb stones.

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

The Lustleigh Tithe Map shows the ash house very clearly.

Indistinct structure depicted on the late 19th century historic map, adjacent to the road, south-east of the house.

The early 20th century historic map shows the ash house much more clearly; as a circular structure on the opposite side of the road to the house.

(08/05/1953) SX76918363. Ash house in good condition, 3 metres in diamter, height approximately 3.5 metres, walling 0.5 metres thick, with roof of corbelled stone. Apparently no window for the tipping in of the ashes, but the doorway is to the south-east. Closer inspection not possible as the building is currently in use as pen for boar. Photograph included. Probably medieval.
