Gappah: site of domesday manor. Now a farm, at domesday, 480 acres, worth 30 shillings. Place name 'gatepadg' in d. B. , meaning 'goat's path. ' said to be the ancient trackway from haldon to staverton (harris).

The prehistoric track known as goatpath passes through the farm orchard (see sx87ne/153) (joce).

The domesday manor also included the lands of bellamarsh (sx87ne/33) and babcombe (sx87ne/4). By c13 the manor was divided into 3 parts - gatepath and bellamarsh (centred on bellamarsh barton), gatepath bollay (gappah) and babcombe. Gappah is documented as de getepath in several 13-14c sources. Referred to as "village" in early c17 (see dro). Had declined by 1780 and comprised only 5 houses by 1840 (pye).
