Summary

Parish church at berry pomeroy, st. Mary 15th century. Good porch with stone- vaulted roof, large west tower, windows and handsome arcades. On caps of south arcade piers are scrolls bearing the names of those who contributed to the rebuilding of the church in the 15th century. Fine tombs of sir richard pomeroy (died 1501) and his wife, elizabeth, and of sir edward seymour (died 1613) with his wife, elizabeth, and eleven children. Long rood screen (copeland).

Church of st. Mary. Rebuilt in c15 possibly by sir richard de pomeroy, restored circa late c17 and 1878-79. Tower has c13/14 west doorway. Stone rubble with freestone dressings and slate roofs, tower rendered. Nave and chancel in one. See doe list for full details (doe).

Respondent to dean milles questionnaire believed it was erected by the pomeroy family and that the tower measured some 80ft (dean milles).


South Hams District Council, 2002, Berry Pomeroy Conservation Area Appraisal (Report - non-specific). SDV356438.

Rebuilt during the 15th century, possibly by Sir Richard Pomeroy whose monument, dated 1496, is amongst many inside, including one to Rev'd John Prince, vicar of St Mary's. Restored circa late 17th century and 1878-9. The tower has a 13th or 14th century moulded doorway on the west.
