Visit on 16/08/1951 records that the well house is entered through Budd's Antique Shop on the west side of the passage way. Door was locked and the key was not available so unable to inspect this antiquity.

Now (1880) supplied with a pump.

Windeatt, E., 1904, Totnes: Its Mayor and Mayoralties, 502 (Article in Serial). SDV350465.

The old town pump has on it a brass plate with "R.M. Mayor, 1785." This is over a very old well known as Brassiter's Well. It appears in a list of the town wells as early as 1475-6.

Rea, C. F., 1923, Totnes in Bygone Days, 11 (Un-published). SDV337093.

Dated 07/12/1923. Visit in around 1923 records that the narrow passage between the post office and 29 Fore Street was the approach to one of the ancient town wells. In 1475, it was called Brasyteryswille and later Branters (Brewers) Well, other names for it were Little Well and the Town Pump. In the Guildhall is a small brass plate inscribed "R. M. Mayor, 1785" which was taken from the old town pump. Lieut. Reynell Mitchell R. N. of Bigadon, was mayor in that year and the plate perhaps recorded the reconstruction of the well.
