Full description

Untitled Source (Migrated Record). SDV298958.

Holbeam, site of building. Nothing visible except slight levelling of ground, and a few large pieces of roughly hewn stone on the ground, which are presumably from the walls of the building. Nothing is known of the history or even the type of the building which once stood here.

Earthworks associated with the former settlement of Holbeam are visible on digital images derived from lidar data captured between 1998 and 2017, to the southeast of Little Holbeam. The earthworks comprise a rectilinear shaped platform, circa 50m long by 35m wide, which coincides with a cross marked as ‘Holbeam (site of)’ on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map of the late 19th century; to the west and north of the possible building platform are broad linear banks, circa 8m wide, which possibly define partial rectilinear shaped enclosures for other dwellings, and to the east a circular pit, circa 13m diameter, with outer bank interpreted as a possible extractive pit. The earthworks do not correspond with any features shown in this location on the Parish Tithe Map of the mid-19th century, although buildings of Little Holbeam are shown to the immediate north. This supports the interpretation that these earthworks represent possible evidence of a medieval shrunken settlement which had partly been abandoned by the early to mid-19th century, of which only Little Holbeam survives.
