A large rectilinear shaped pit, circa 157m long by 87m wide, is visible as an earthwork on aerial photographs taken in 1946, within Staplehill Copse, Newton Abbot. The earthwork does not correspond with any pit features on the available 19th century historic mapping, although ‘Sand and Gravel Pits’ are shown in this area on the 1953-1969 National Grid Ordnance Survey map. It is in proximity to earthworks of a possible medieval tin working site (MDV21250), although does not exhibit the same characteristics as these earthworks. It is therefore interpreted as a possible quarry for sand and or gravel extraction of 19th or 20th century date which has likely been largely levelled by 1983 when the area has been developed into a caravan site.
