Name:BARROW in the Parish of Chudleigh

Summary

Haldon. In 1773, workmen found an urn in a large oblong stone heap, from which they had been taking flints to repair the kenneford-newton bushel(abbot) road. The tumulus is situated near the kenneford road, to the e of the 8th. Milestone from exeter. The urn was 1.22m deep, let into a pit, and covered with a flat stone. The workmen broke the urn which contained ashes and bone fragments. A second urn was found about 4m from the first, and a third about 3.5m from the second. Both contained black greasy ashes and splintered bone, and were badly decayed. The first urn is made of dark greyish clay, glazed with a brighter brown and decorated (worth).

Vis=17/8/1982 (os) apparent site of barrow now covered by forestry track.

Vis=25/6/1953 (os) area planted with conifers. Tumuli almost certainly destroyed (osa sx88se11).

Vis=1/9/1999 (griffith) the probable site of this barrow located at above ngr, lying about 5m west of the forestry track, under trees and scrub. Its condition is fairly mangled, which would be consonant with the information above. Apparent size c.15m diam, c.0.7m high (griffith).
