Summary
Haldon. In 1773, workmen found an urn in a large oblong stone heap, from which they had been taking flints to repair the kenneford-newton bushel(abbot) road. The tumulus is situated near the kenneford road, to the e of the 8th. Milestone from exeter. The urn was 1.22m deep, let into a pit, and covered with a flat stone. The workmen broke the urn which contained ashes and bone fragments. A second urn was found about 4m from the first, and a third about 3.5m from the second. Both contained black greasy ashes and splintered bone, and were badly decayed. The first urn is made of dark greyish clay, glazed with a brighter brown and decorated (worth).
