Summary

An area of ridge and furrow visible on aerial photos to the east of the farm are indicative of former orchards. The practice of ridging orchards was common in previous centuries to prevent the water-logging of roots which would eventually damage the trees.

Full description

South West Heritage Trust, 1838-1848, Digitised Tithe Maps and Transcribed Apportionments (Cartographic). SDV359954.

Plots 259, 260 and 261 are named as Back Orchard, garden and Alder Beer on the Whitestone Tithe Apportionment. Back Orchard and Alder Beer are recorded as being orchards and the garden as planted with apple trees. The plot referred to by Pamment (284), Fore Orchard Mead, is located immediately to the west and was under pasture at that time.

Site visit 1985. The field name Fore Orchard Mead from the 1840 tithe map would suggest an orchard within this area. The practice of ridging orchards was common in previous centuries to prevent the water-logging of roots which would damage the trees eventually.
