Summary

Great hill, st. Marychurch.179m above sea level. Before the construction of the large supply reservoir in 1916 the site was known as the beacon at holloway head. There was a well-marked hollow with a large stone to one side of it. The hollow appears to be swedwell lane, climbing the hill from the s. The 'great hill' is the highest part of a four mile ridge running from milber down to the sea at maidencombe. A field in the adjoining parish of coffinswell is called fireber (russell).
