Summary

Bench cave was discovered in march 1861 during quarrying operations on the northern slopes of furzeham hill. Hundreds of animal bones, mostly hyena, were found, but no flint implements.(pengelly) two palaeolithic flints have been found (smith). The finds from the cave, in british and torquay museums, included 4 earlier upper palaeolithic pieces.(bonsall).
