Summary

Site of Whitestone Church House. Rebuilt in 1745 it was used both as a school and as a poorhouse. Marked on the 1880s-1890s Ordnance Survey map as a post office. It burnt down in the early 1930s.

Building(s) marked as 'School House (P.O.)'.

Pearson, J. B., 1900, Church Houses in Devon, 206, 211 (Article in Serial). SDV5752.

It appears originally as a charity house for those called the second poor. It was rebuilt in 1745 and used partly as a school, partly as home for five of the second poor. According to the records of the Charity Commissioners of 1818 it was then being used as a school and a poorhouse.

Whitestone Church House, to the north-east of the church in the angle of the road junction. Referred to in a deed of enfeoffment 1714. It burnt down in the early 1930s, only the stone foundations of the rectangular building remain. Now much overgrown.
