Field named as Poundhouse Orchard (Plot 236) on the Whitestone Tithe Apportionment.

The field shown on the Tithe Map as extending to the west of West Town, on the north side of the stream is shown as orchards (now two fields). The area immediately south of the brook is also shown as orchard.

A ridge and furrow field system at West Town. It runs from buildings west along the north side of Alphin Brook.

The field name Poundhouse Orchard from the 1840 tithe map would suggest an orchard within this area. The practice of ridging orchards was common in previous centuries to prevent the water-logging of roots which would eventually damage the trees.

Ridge and furrow is recorded in Devon's HER as visible on aerial photographs (p1). It is likely that this record is associated with CIN 9650: the grid reference for 9652 is 100m south of 9650 and 250m south of the A30, but the location description suggests cultivation within a field on the north side of the A30, immediately to the west of bulidings at West Town. The photographs recorded by the HER were not available for transcription and digital recording as part of the National Mapping Programme. The features described could not be clearly defined from other available photographs.
