Name:BARN in the Parish of

Summary

Remains of granary or barn now clifton grove cottages. Vis=estimated -/-/1929(ellis, a. C. ) judging from the thickness of the walls and buttresses it would appear that it dates back to monastic days. The building adjoining the se end of the old barn is also of some considerable age but appears to be of later construction. Vis=23/7/1951(os) the barn, now converted into dwelling houses still has single and one double buttress and appears to be in good condition. It is ragstone built and has cement facing on the west side where most of the remaining buttresses are. The buttresses are missing and various modifications have been made on the east side. The building adjoining the se corner is of no great age probably erected little more than a hundred years ago (os). Vis=barn formerly attached to torwood manor house. On the earliest available evidence there were originally two barns attached to the house, as watkin shows. Now believed that the one which survives is the western one, with the manor house originally situated to the south-east of it (gallant). Vis=mention of purchaser in 1767. Demolished in 1842 (hamblin).
