Full description

Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division, Untitled Source (Ordnance Survey Archaeology Division Card). SDV24.

Vis=17/6/1953 (os) mound (diameter 9.5m, height 1.1m) with unsurveyable traces of possible surrounding ditch. Possibly a small bowl barrow.

TAYLOR + GRINSELL, Untitled Source (Report - Survey). SDV285033.

Vis=6/9/1981 + 29/3/1982 (taylor + grinsell) heath. Ditch located only by probing. Diameter 10m and 1m in height measurements of the barrow. Ngr given as sx90327885.

TAYLOR, WORKSHEET, Untitled Source (Report - Survey). SDV287437.

Vis=13/11/1977 (taylor) low chert circular cairn surrounded by (probably continuous) shallow ditch. The whole area is under heather with some gorse grading down to peat, and this vegetation up to 1m total depth emphasises the actual height of the cairn. This continuous cover suggests that the area round the cairn has not been disturbed in recent times. There are indications of other features, of a somewhat similar nature in the immediate vicinity, (200m or less distant) (taylor, worksheet).

A mound is visible on aerial photographs of 1946 as a roughly circular subtle earthwork approximately 9m in diameter, on the gentle north-west facing upper slopes of Ideford Common, Chudleigh. The mound may be the remains of a barrow of Bronze Age date, part of a wider barrow cemetery recorded across Ideford Common (MDV79238).
The mound remains visible as a gorse covered earthwork on digital images derived from aerial photographs of 2015. A slight trace of an outer ditch is identifiable from the 2015 imagery.
