Higher Primrose Cottage appears to have been built in the early 19th century. It is shown on the 1846 Tithe Map as part of a single house. This was subdivided into four dwellings by the late 19th century. The two middle cottages (now Higher Primrose Cottage and Cedarwood Cottage) were subsequently re-amalgamated to form a single dwelling, 1 Castle Street and in 1991 planning permission was granted for the reinstatement of two dwellings. These works were started but not completed. Further planning permission was granted in 2008 resulting in the creation of Higher Primrose Cottage and Cedarwood Cottage.
Historic England, 2024, Higher Primrose Cottage, Castle Street, Winkleigh, Devon (List of Blds of Arch or Historic Interest). SDV366258.
Notification that Higher Primrose Cottage has been removed from the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest.
It was recommended for removal from the List for the following principal reasons:
Degree of architectural interest: the building has been extensively altered in the C19, C20, and C21 and a significant proportion of the historic fabric has been removed eroding its architectural integrity as an early-C19 dwelling.
Degree of historic interest: the extent of alteration means that the historic evolution of the building is no longer legible in its fabric or
plan form; it is not associated with a historic person or event of national significance.
Ordnance Survey, 2024, Mastermap 2024 (Cartographic). SDV365834.
