Summary

"Cantilever" Pillbox

Full description

Aerial photographs taken in May 1946 and August 1947 show a “cantilever” pillbox standing between the perimeter track and the railway line at the NE corner of Rochford Airfield. Although 1960 aerial photographs show it surviving at that time, subsequent aerial photographs from 1970 onwards show no sign of it. <1> <2> <3> <4>

Although the photographic evidence suggests the demolition of the pillbox in the 1960’s, it is possible that it may in fact have been buried beneath mounded soil and grass around the end of the runway. It has not been possible to access the site and confirmation of its demolition or burial has not therefore been possible.
