Summary
Floodlight (destroyed)
Full description
An aerial photograph taken in October 1946 shows the concrete base of a “floodlight” in a field to the W of Willow Grove. Floodlight bases are very distinctive; a 40 ft circle of concrete, grassed centre, with a rectangular base at one point of the rim. The entire appearance is of a diamond ring seen from a distance. Close alongside the circle, to the NE, the base of the generator building can be seen as a small rectangle. By this date it is clear that the steel framework of the floodlight, and the generator building, had been removed as the experiments in using floodlights had been abandoned in 1940, leaving just the remains. For more information on floodlights see SMRs 20851 and 20565, <1>
Viewed from the road in December 2004, hedges have been removed and the area is a wide arable field with clearly nothing surviving of the floodlight or its base.
