Summary

Road Barrier (destroyed)

Full description

Contemporary records state, “Road barrier. Road B.2012, Whalebone P/H. Map ref. 224165”. (Mil. Ed.) <1>

“The Whalebone” public house still stands, at South Woodham Ferrers, but the Military Grid Reference is 244165, not 224165. It is clear from wartime maps that the road on which it stands was once a significant thoroughfare but with the re-routing of the B.1012 (not 2012) this are has now been by-passed and Old Wickford Road is now a block turning. Northing survives of the road barrier.
