Summary
Ammunition Shelter (destroyed)
Full description
Contemporary records state, “Storage House for Explosives. The Vineyards” <1> “The Vineyards” was a large house on the S side of Maldon Road E of High St, Great Baddow. An aerial photograph taken in May 1946 shows it standing in extensive grounds with many outbuildings and large trees. The estate appears to stretch from High St to the Causeway. No obvious “Storage House for Explosives” can be made out. From the wartime records it is apparent that most of these shelters were build to house the ammunition for a nearby spigot mortar site and this one was probably built to support such a site on The Causeway (see SMR 20889).
The house has now been demolished and the entire area has been re-developed into a tall office or apartment block (Marrable House), a retail complex and large car park.
