Summary
Road Barrier (destroyed)
Full description
Contemporary records state, “Road Barrier. Road No. N. 806, Village Bridge. Map ref. 196234”. (Mil. Ed.) <1> The “Village” Bridge stands half a mile to the east of Sandon where Sandon Brook passes beneath Woodhill Road. A barrier here would, most probably, have been built as a “nodal” point defence rather than as part of the GHQ Line which ran from N to S just a quarter of a mile to the W. Little can be seen on an aerial photograph taken in May 1946 but marks by the roadside indicate that the barrier, demolished by that date, crossed the road a few yards to the E of the bridge. <2>
Nothing of the barrier now survives.
<1> unknown, 1968, War Time Contraventions 1968, Sandon (LIST). SEX31436.
<2> RAF, 1946, 106G-UK 1496-4066, May 1946 (AP). SEX65507.
