Summary
Road Barrier (destroyed)
Full description
Contemporary records state, “Concrete pimples. 75 Vicarage Road. Map ref. 151241” and “6 Concrete Pimples. ‘Harlow’, 140 Vicarage Rd. Map ref. 151241”. (Mil. Ed.) <1>
These two entries refer to the fixed outer elements of a road barrier across Vicarage Road. An aerial photograph, taken in June 1946 clearly shows the pimples in the front garden of no. 140 with four lines of dots across the road to no. 75. When the steel sockets, to take lengths of vertical steel railway line, were taken up from the road surface the resultant patches caused by a different colour in-fill can often be seen on aerial photographs of the period. <2>
Nothing of the pimples now survives.
