Ammunition Shelter (destroyed)

Full description

Contemporary records state, “Storehouse for Explosives. Gravel pits, Princes Road”. <1> Aerial photographs from June 1946 show a large gravel pit to the S of Princes Road, E of Longstomps Avenue.

The “storehouse for explosives”, or ammunition shelter, can be most clearly seen on an oblique aerial photograph taken from a height of 1000 feet in March 1949. It was, typically, a small Nissen-type hut with brick end walls, standing on the gravel pit land just a few yards S of Princes Road. The entrance can be seen in the E end wall. <2> <3>

The area of the gravel pits is now the John Sherman Playing Field.
