Summary
Ammunition Shelter (destroyed), SE corner of original Widford Roundabout, Chelmsford
Full description
Contemporary records state, “Ammunition/Storage Chamber. The junction of Princes Ave, and Wood St. Map ref. 146241”. (Mil. Ed.) The landowner is given as “The Petroleum Board”. <1>
Aerial photographs from June 1946, and other entries in the wartime records, show that there was a petrol storage depot on the E side of Wood Street close to the Widford Roundabout. Between this and the corner of the junction was a small area of waste land crossed by a thick band of anti-tank pimples. In the centre of this band was a small nissen-type ammunition shelter. This can be most clearly seen on a low-level oblique aerial photograph taken in March 1949. <2> <3>
