Summary
Air Raid Shelters (destroyed)
Full description
An aerial photograph taken in June 1946 shows the Crompton Parkinson works N of Writtle Road. There are a great many buildings, all of whom have camouflage painting on the roof. The NW area of the site is mainly open ground and bordering this, in three distinct rows, are what appear to be approximately 40 “military-pattern” air raid shelters. These were long vaulted chambers with an entrance at each end, the whole structure being heaped over with soil to form a long mound. <1>
In 2005, the area of the shelters is now fenced-off waste land and The Waterhouse Business Park.
