Summary

Ammunition Shelter (destroyed)

Full description

Contemporary records state, “Storehouse for Explosives. Between Staff Garage and river, Hoffman’s Work. Map ref. 155263”. <1>

The military grid reference for this ammunition shelter places it very close to the defence post (SMR 20963) which still survives on the east boundary of the former Hoffman’s ball-bearing works. In this position the shelter would probably have stored ammunition not only for the defence post but any other defence positions close by.

An aerial photograph taken in Sept 1946 shows a Nissen-type hut at TL 7091 0780, approximately 40 yards from the defence post and although perhaps larger than others recorded in Chelmsford, this is taken as the ammunition shelter. <2>
