Summary
Ammunition Shelter (destroyed)
Full description
Contemporary records state, “Storehouse for Explosives. Hoffmans Sports Ground. Map ref. 141262”. (Mil. Ed.) <1>
What is thought to have been this ammunition shelter can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1946 and 1960. it stood, typically of such shelters, as a small Nissen-type hut on the E edge of the sports ground. Here, it probably stored the “bombs” for the spigot mortar emplacement which is described in a further contemporary entry as being in the “S.E. corner of the sports ground” (SMR 20967). <2> <3>
Although most of this area has now been re-developed to housing, a narrow strip of land – grass with overhead trees – still survives. The ammunition shelter stood immediately E of where No. 30, Canterbury Way now is.
