Summary
Ammunition Shelter (destroyed)
Full description
Contemporary records state, “Storehouse for Explosives. Baddow Mill. Map ref. 161247”. (Mil. Ed.) <1> The address has been variously amended to read “Baddow”, “Moulsham” or “Chelmer” mills but the map reference clearly identifies it as Moulsham Mill.
This ammunition shelter can be seen on aerial photographs taken in 1947 and, most clearly, on an oblique aerial photograph at low-level, in 1949. <2> <3> <4> It stood to the W of the mill, typically a small Nissen hut, with its entrance at the E end. Here, it would have stored the “bombs” for the spigot mortar emplacements (SMRs 20905, 20906 and 20907) at the mill.
In 2005, the site is now a small area of grass outside Marriage’s Country Store.
