Summary
Ammunition Shelter (destroyed)
Full description
Contemporary records state, “Ammunition shelter. Field fronting South Street – between Vicarage and school. Map ref. 142319”. (Mil. Ed.) <1>
South Street runs N to S through Great Waltham. The vicarage stands at the N end while the school is c. 200 yards to the S. An O.S. map dated 1973 shows that between the two, immediately fronting the W side of South Street, there was a small meadow. This is, presumably, where the ammunition shelter stood. This area has now been built over by the houses, “Ridgeway” and “Ravenscroft”. <2>
<1> unknown, 1968, War Time Contraventions 1968, Great Waltham (LIST). SEX31436.
<2> Ordnance Survey, 1945-present, 1:2500, TL6913 dated 1973 (Map). SEX60991.
