Summary

During excavation of neolithic cursus, east end, 2 adjacent features were excavated and proved to be medieval in date.

Full description

During excavation of neolithic cursus, east end, 2 adjacent features were excavated and proved to be medieval in date. The features showed on APs, and were located, to the east of the cursus. They comprised a ditch with V-shaped profile and an oval-shaped pit. The ditch produced later medieval pottery, iron, fired clay, flints, animal bone and charcoal. The pit cut the ditch but neither feature is likely to predate the 13th-14th centuries. The ditch alignment corresponded with the general alignment of field boundaries in the area and the pit was probably "no more than a source of sand and gravel at the edge of a field". Medieval pottery also came from the topsoil-cursus ditch interface. 4 medieval fabrics are represented and these were compared to the Writtle sequence, and a find from Hadleign. 2 of the fabrics could be compared to 15th-early 16th century fabrics, a third to a late 13th-early 14th century one and the fourth to one dated at Writtle as pre 1300 (though residual to c1350). Other finds included parts of iron nails, waste flint, bone <1> <2> Plan of features in SMR <3>
