Three skeletons and three iron pokers found here in 1850.

Full description

Three skeletons and three iron weapons found here in 1850. Temples Field is located from the Tithe Map. <1> <2> <3> The skeletons were found during railway construction. The iron weapons eventually went to Chelmsford Museum. Formerly thought to be Anglo-Saxon they are in fact Iron Age, La Tene II-III, pokers. The Witham examples, though in a poor state of preservation, are nevertheless three of the finer specimens from Britain, as well as being the largest known. The Witham pokers must have been virtually identical when complete, suggesting they are the product of one smith or at least one workshop. It seems that the shalfts were bound for half of their length with organic material. Rodwell groups them in Type C. <4> <5> Earlier references to the pokers. <6> <7> <8>

Three slices or pokers from Witham, a hoard of tools used by blacksmiths to manipulate fuel in the fire. <9>
